गोहत्या का प्रश्न केवल धार्मिक आस्थाओं से ही नहीं जुड़ा है, बल्कि देश के अर्थतंत्र, पर्यावरण व जलसंकट जैसे कई महत्वपूर्ण मुद्दे इससे सीधे प्रभावित होते हैं। आज बड़ी गंभीरता से यह बात कही जाती है कि अगला विश्व युद्ध पानी के लिए होगा, इस दृष्टि से यदि कत्लखानों का विचार करें तो जलसंकट को बढ़ाने में इनकी भूमिका की अनदेखी नहीं की जा सकती।
एक कत्लखाने में प्रति पशु पांच सौ लीटर पानी लगता है। हिन्दुस्तान टाइम्स के प्रकाशित एक रपट के अनुसार कोलकाता के मोरी गांव कत्लखाने में 17 लाख 50 हजार लीटर पानी प्रतिदिन लगता है। इसके विपरीत एक व्यक्ति को प्रतिदिन औसतन 25 लीटर पानी की आवश्यकता होती है। इसका अर्थ यह हुआ कि कोलकाता के इस कत्लखाने में करीब 70 हजार लोगों के उपयोग का पानी नष्ट कर दिया जाता है।
मुम्बई के देवनार कत्लखाने में 18 लाख 50 हजार लीटर पानी प्रतिदिन खर्च होता है। यहां लगभग 74 हजार लोगों के उपयोग का पानी नष्ट कर दिया जाता है। आंध्र प्रदेश के हैदराबाद स्थित कत्लखाने अल कबीर एक्सपोर्ट लिमिटेड में 6 हजार 600 पशु प्रतिदिन काटे जाते हैं। यहां 1 लाख 32 हजार लोगों के उपयोग का पानी प्रतिदिन नष्ट कर दिया जाता है।
गाय का दूध 30 - 40 रु. प्रति किलो की दर से मिलता है। और 600 ml. कोल्ड ड्रिंक 30 rs. की है तो एक लीटर 50 rs. पड़ा ... जबकि देश में 15 रु. लीटर पानी बिक रहा है। जिस देश में गाय का दूध नहीं बेचा जाता था उस देश में पानी बेचा जा रहा है। ये कत्लखाने जितना पानी बर्बाद कर रहे हैं उससे पानी का संकट देश में कितना गंभीर होने वाला है यह समझा जा सकता है। इसलिए यह विचार करने की आवश्यकता है कि आज देश में पानी की ज्यादा आवश्यकता है या मांस की।

In a written reply to Lok Sabha, minister of state for agriculture Charan Das Mahant said that "the estimated number of cattle slaughtered by States/Union Territories" stood at 24.77 lakh during 2009-10, 23.44 lakh during 2010-11 and 30.4 lakh during 2011-12.
The Minister also informed that there were 1,482 registered slaughter houses across the country at the end of last fiscal.
Maharashtra has 316 registered slaughter houses, followed by Uttar Pradesh at 285 and Andhra Pradesh at 185.
"The data on unauthorised slaughter house for cattle is not available with the department since such information are not collected from States/UTs governments. Registration of slaughterhouses is in the domain of State/UTs governments," Mahant said.
